Window coverings are fitted last and noticed first. Everything else in a room can be right, and a curtain that hangs two inches short or a blind that leaks a bright line down one edge will still be the thing your eye goes to. It is also the one element people commonly buy twice — once in a hurry at possession, and again properly a year later.
The work itself is less about the fabric than about the measurement and the fitting. Indian windows are rarely square, sills and handles get in the way, and the same blind mounted two different ways will behave completely differently for light and privacy.
Curtains or blinds — or both
- Curtains soften a room, absorb a little sound, and give the fullest look when drawn. They need wall space on either side to stack back into, and floor clearance to hang correctly.
- Blinds give far finer control over light and take up almost no space. Blinds installation is usually the quicker job, and office blinds in particular are chosen for glare rather than appearance.
- Both together is common and not excessive — a blind for daytime light control, a curtain over it for evenings and appearance. It also lets you use a lighter fabric than a curtain alone would need.
A useful way to decide: if the window is about light management, start with a blind. If it is about how the room feels, start with a curtain.
The blind types, and what each actually does
- Roller blinds — a single sheet that rolls up. Simplest mechanism, fewest parts to fail, widest fabric choice.
- Zebra blinds — alternating sheer and solid bands that slide over each other, so you can tune light without opening fully. Currently the most requested type in Indian homes.
- Roman blinds — fold into soft horizontal pleats and read as fabric rather than as a mechanism. Suit bedrooms and living rooms.
- Vertical blinds — hanging vanes that rotate. The standard answer for wide windows and sliding doors.
- Venetian and wooden blinds — horizontal slats you can angle, letting you keep light while blocking the view in.
- Panel blinds — wide flat panels that slide past each other. Large glazed openings and room dividers.
- Pleated blinds — a concertina fold, compact when raised, good for small and angled windows.
- Blackout — a lining or fabric that stops light rather than filtering it. Bedrooms, nurseries and media rooms.
- Bamboo and natural — woven natural material, warmer in appearance, filters rather than blocks.
- Outdoor blinds — balconies and terraces, built for sun, wind and rain rather than appearance.
Measurement and mounting: where it goes right or wrong
This is the heart of the trade, and the part customers are least involved in even though it decides the result.
- Inside the recess — the blind sits within the window opening. Neater, keeps the sill usable, but any side gap will let a line of light through. That gap is unavoidable to some degree, because the blind must clear the sides to move.
- Outside the recess — mounted on the wall above and beyond the opening. Covers fully, controls light far better, projects into the room.
- Bedrooms are the deciding case. If light at the edges will bother you, mount outside. This single choice matters more than which blackout fabric you pick.
- Curtain drop — floor length, sill length or below sill. Decide before measuring; changing it afterwards means re-hemming or replacing. Curtain rod installation height affects this, so settle both together.
- Stack-back space — curtains need somewhere to gather when open. Without it they permanently cover part of the glass.
- Obstructions — handles, grilles, sills, AC units and open-in windows all change the mounting decision.
The measurement should be done on site by the person responsible for the fitting. Fabric and blinds cut to size cannot be adjusted afterwards.
Motorisation: when it is worth it
Motorised curtains and blinds have moved from novelty to ordinary, but they are not equally useful on every window.
- Worth it on windows that are high, very wide, behind furniture, in a stairwell, or operated several times a day.
- Ask about power — whether a point exists at the window or has to be run there. In a finished home this can mean surface conduit or opening the wall.
- Insist on manual override. Motors and remotes fail. There should be a way to move the curtain by hand.
- Decide on integration separately. A motorised curtain can work standalone with its own remote, or be tied into a wider home automation system. The second is a different conversation and worth having before, not after.
How the work runs
- Site visit. Every window measured, mounting decided per window, obstructions noted, and power checked if motorisation is wanted.
- Fabric and type selection. Samples seen in the actual room light — fabric colour shifts considerably between showroom lighting and daylight.
- Confirmation of sizes. Widths, drops and mounting positions agreed in writing before anything is cut.
- Fabrication. Curtains stitched, blinds cut and assembled to the measured sizes.
- Track and bracket fitting. Fixed into something that will hold — a false ceiling or hollow partition needs proper anchoring, not a plug into board.
- Installation and adjustment. Hung, levelled and tested through the full range of movement.
- Final check. Draw and close everything, look for light gaps at the edges, and confirm every mechanism runs smoothly before the installer leaves.
