About welding, fabrication and metal services in India
Welding services and metal fabrication sit apart from everything else on this site. Every other trade installs something that already exists; fabrication makes the thing first. You are not choosing a product — you are commissioning one, usually from a fabricator standing in front of the gap it has to fill, with a tape measure and a piece of chalk.
That is why the usual way of judging welding contractors and fabrication contractors does not help. A finished gate, grill or railing looks the same whether it was made well or badly, because the two things that decide its life — the grade of metal underneath and the quality of the welds — are hidden under paint within a day of being made. The difference shows up in the second or third year, when one is still square and the other has sagged, cracked at a joint, or started rusting through from the inside.
MS or SS: the first decision
Almost every job here starts by choosing between mild steel and stainless steel, and the right answer comes from where it will sit, not from what it should look like.
- Mild steel (MS) work. MS work is strong, easy to weld and easy to shape, which makes it the normal choice for gates, grills, fencing, sheds, structures and anything that will be painted or powder coated. Its weakness is simple: it rusts the moment the coating fails, and it fails first at welds, corners and cut edges.
- Stainless steel (SS) work does not rust, so it belongs wherever paint is impractical or where appearance has to survive years of handling — handrails people touch daily, kitchen and bathroom fittings, balcony railings, and anything on a wet or coastal site.
- Structural steel work is a different question again. Here the metal carries load — columns, beams, trusses, platforms and mezzanines — and section size comes from the load, not from appearance.
- Mixing them badly causes problems. Joining stainless to mild steel without the right treatment sets up corrosion at the joint, which is why the mixed handrail on a painted frame often rusts first exactly where the two meet.
- Ask where each metal is going before agreeing a specification. A fabricator who proposes a grade without asking about exposure is guessing.
What actually decides how long metalwork lasts
Three things, none of them visible after the first coat of paint.
- Section and thickness. The same gate can be made from light or heavy section and look identical when new. Under-specified metal flexes, and a gate that flexes eventually sags and stops closing. Ask what section is being used, in writing.
- The welds. A sound weld is properly penetrated and ground back; a weak one is a bead sitting on the surface. Both disappear under primer. Welds at hinges, corners and load points are where failures start, so those are the ones worth looking at before painting.
- Surface preparation. Paint over mill scale, rust or grease peels within a season no matter how good the paint is. Preparation is the step most often skipped because it is invisible and it is what the whole finish depends on.
If you can inspect the work once before it is painted, do it. After painting, none of these three can be judged at all.
Site fabrication and workshop fabrication
This trade works in two quite different ways, and knowing which your job needs avoids most disappointments.
- Site fabrication. Gates, grills, railings, sheds and repairs are usually cut and welded at your location, because they have to fit an opening exactly as it is rather than as it was drawn. The fit is better; the finish is limited to what can be applied on site.
- Workshop fabrication. Sheet metal work, precision items, custom metal work and industrial metal fabrication are made to a drawing in a workshop, where cutting, bending and powder coating are properly controlled. The finish is better; the measurement has to be right first, because nothing can be adjusted on delivery.
- Most larger jobs are both — sections made in the workshop, assembled and welded at site.
- Powder coating changes the order of work. It has to happen before installation, so any welding done after coating will damage it and need touching up.
- Sheet metal work is its own specialisation — cutting, bending, folding and forming — and needs different equipment from gate and grill fabrication.
The things people actually order
- Gates, grills and fencing. The commonest job in this trade. Gate fabrication is judged on whether it stays square and swings or slides freely after a year, which comes back to section, welds and hinges.
- Metal railings and staircases. Balcony, terrace and staircase railings, and steel staircases where there is no room for a concrete one. Height and gap spacing are safety matters, not styling.
- Metal doors and metal windows. Steel frames, shutters and security doors, made to an opening rather than bought to a size.
- Metal sheds and structures. Shed fabrication for parking, storage and workshops — frame, purlins and sheeting, with the frame designed for wind rather than just for weight.
- Metal roofing and cladding. Sheeting over a steel frame, where the fixings, laps and slope decide whether it leaks.
- Custom metal work. Brackets, frames, supports, planters, grilles and everything that exists because a specific space needed it.
- Industrial metal fabrication. Platforms, walkways, machine guards, racks and trolleys, usually made to a drawing and to a tolerance.
Repair and modification is often the better answer
- A sagging gate can usually be re-squared and re-hung rather than replaced — sagging is a hinge and diagonal-bracing problem more often than a metal problem.
- Rusted sections can be cut out and new metal welded in, keeping the rest of the structure.
- Railings can be raised, extended or infilled where they no longer meet a safety requirement.
- A shed can be re-sheeted over its existing frame if the frame is still sound, which is far less disruptive than rebuilding.
- Ask about repair before assuming replacement. This is one of the few trades where a good fabricator can genuinely save you the bigger job.
What to settle before appointing a fabricator
- The metal grade and section size for each part of the job — MS or SS, and what thickness.
- Whether the work is fabricated at site or in a workshop, and what that means for finish and fit.
- The full coating system — preparation, primer and topcoat, or powder coating or galvanising — not just the colour.
- Hardware: hinges, locks, rollers and tracks on gates, which is what usually fails first.
- Whether you can see the work before it is painted.
- Who cuts, drills and makes good the wall or floor where it fixes, and who clears the scrap.
- For structural steel, who is responsible for the design of the section sizes.
