Landscaping is the only work on this site that is alive. Every other trade hands over at its best and slowly wears; a garden hands over at its least complete and gets better for years — provided someone looks after it. That single difference should shape how you plan it and who you hire.

It also means the two most common disappointments are predictable. A garden built without thinking about maintenance looks worse every month. And a garden designed around plants that do not suit the local climate, soil or light will keep needing replacement no matter how well it was installed.

Hardscape and softscape

Every landscape is a balance of these two, and deciding the balance comes before choosing a single plant.

• Hardscape is the built part that holds it together — pathways, edging, retaining, steps, seating, water features such as a fountain or pond, and lighting. It defines how the space is used and where people walk.

Soil, water and light decide what survives

• Drip irrigation delivers water at the root and wastes very little. Best for beds, shrubs and containers.

• Automation makes the difference between a garden that gets watered and one that gets watered when someone remembers.
• Lay the lines before the planting and paving, not through them afterwards.
• Plan for the dry months, when the garden depends entirely on this system.

Maintenance is not an afterthought here

• A garden is the only thing on a site that keeps changing after handover. Left alone, it does not stay the same — it declines.
• Regular work means mowing, lawn maintenance, pruning, weeding, fertilising, pest control and seasonal replanting.
• Discuss the maintenance arrangement while the design is being decided, because a design nobody can maintain is a design that will fail.
• If nobody will be looking after it regularly, say so — a low-maintenance planting scheme is a legitimate design brief, and a good landscaper will welcome the honesty.
