Looking for Lift & Elevator Services?

Every lift job is different. You may be putting a home elevator into an existing house, a passenger lift into a new building, a goods lift into a warehouse, an accessibility lift for step-free access, or modernising a lift whose parts are no longer made.

Your priorities may differ too — ride quality, a supplier who answers at night, parts that will still exist in ten years, or simply clearing the statutory inspection without delay.

The difficulty is not finding someone who will sell you a lift. It is finding someone who will still answer when it stops with someone inside.

Understanding lift and elevator

About lifts and elevators in India

A lift is the only machine in a building that carries people, runs unattended and cannot simply be switched off when it misbehaves. That single fact shapes everything about this trade — it is a regulated installation rather than a fitting, and the servicing arrangement matters as much as the equipment.

It is also the one thing in a building where the supplier relationship continues for decades. A lift bought today will be maintained, modernised and eventually replaced by companies that have to be reachable years from now. That makes who you buy from at least as important as what you buy.

Permission and inspection: this part is statutory

Most states have their own Lift Act or equivalent rules, and the sequence is generally the same everywhere.

  • Permission before installation. The installation is typically approved before it begins, not after.
  • Inspection before use. The lift is examined and cleared before it can be put into service.
  • Periodic inspection thereafter, with records maintained.
  • Society or building approval on top, in apartments and commercial premises.
  • The details vary by state, so a contractor who works in your state is worth more than one who does not.

Ask about this at the enquiry stage. It affects the schedule, and it is not something to discover once the shaft is already built.

Which type of lift suits the building

  • Hydraulic — a ram pushes the car up. Suits low-rise buildings and homes, needs less headroom at the top but a machine space, and is generally simpler to maintain.
  • Traction — ropes and a counterweight. More efficient over many floors, smoother at speed, and the standard for taller buildings.
  • Machine room less (MRL) — the drive sits within the shaft, removing the separate machine room entirely. The usual answer when there is simply no space for a machine room.
  • Home lifts — a category of their own, sized for a household rather than a crowd, often with a smaller pit requirement and a domestic power supply.
  • Goods and freight — specified by load rather than passenger count, with heavier doors and more robust finishes.
  • Dumbwaiters — small service lifts for food, files or linen between floors.
  • Capsule, panoramic and glass — chosen for appearance, and needing a shaft designed around visibility rather than enclosure.
  • Escalators and moving walkways — a different discipline again, driven by footfall and floor-to-floor geometry.

What the building has to provide

This surprises people: several of the most important elements are the building side's responsibility, not the lift supplier's.

  • The shaft, built to the supplier's drawing — correct internal dimensions, plumb walls, and no encroachment by beams or services.
  • Pit depth at the bottom and headroom at the top, both to the specified figures.
  • A machine space where the chosen type needs one.
  • A dedicated power supply at the right rating, with earthing.
  • Access for delivery of the equipment, which on a tight site can determine what is even possible.

A shaft built wrong is the most common cause of delay in this trade, because correcting it means structural work. Get the supplier drawing before the shaft is cast, not after.

Maintenance and AMC: read the entrapment clause

For a lift, maintenance is not optional upkeep — it is the difference between a fault and an incident, and statutory regimes generally expect servicing records.

  • Visit frequency — how often the lift AMC brings someone out, and whether that is stated or left vague.
  • What is covered — which parts are included and which are billed separately.
  • Breakdown response time, and whether it differs at night or on holidays.
  • Entrapment response — the single most important line in the contract, and the one people read only after someone has been stuck inside.
  • Rescue on power failure — whether the lift brings itself to a floor and opens, or simply stops.
  • Records, since inspection will ask for them.

Repair, or modernise?

Older lifts reach a point where repair stops being the sensible answer.

  • Modernise when parts are obsolete — an unavailable controller board turns every lift repair or elevator repair into a long outage.
  • Modernise for safety features that did not exist when the lift was installed: door sensors instead of mechanical edges, overload detection, automatic rescue on power failure.
  • Modernisation keeps the shaft and structure and replaces drive, controller, doors and interiors — far less disruptive than a full replacement, and usually much faster.
  • Replace when the shaft itself no longer suits the building's use, or when travel and capacity need to change.

How lift work runs

  1. Site assessment. Travel height, number of floors, expected usage, available space and power all examined before any type is recommended.
  2. Type and capacity decided, with the drive type matched to the building rather than to habit.
  3. Shaft drawing issued to the building side, and the shaft built or verified against it.
  4. Statutory permission obtained before installation begins.
  5. Equipment delivery and erection — guides, car, doors, drive and controller. Lift installation and elevator installation are the same work under two names.
  6. Wiring and commissioning, with safety devices set and tested.
  7. Statutory inspection and clearance before the lift is put into use.
  8. Handover and AMC start, with documentation, operating instructions and emergency procedure explained to the building.

How to choose a lift company

Searching for lift companies, elevator companies, lift contractors or elevator contractors near me returns manufacturers, dealers and independent service firms. What separates the ones worth shortlisting:

  • They assess the building before recommending a type, rather than quoting a standard model.
  • They handle the statutory permission and inspection process, and say so plainly.
  • They issue a shaft drawing early, before the structure is built.
  • They have a local service presence — a lift is a decades-long relationship, and response time depends on proximity.
  • They are specific about entrapment response, not just breakdown response.
  • They can service lifts they did not install, which tells you something about their engineering depth.

Before deciding, consider

  • Who is responsible for the shaft, pit and machine space, and to whose drawing.
  • What the warranty covers, and when the AMC begins relative to it.
  • Availability of spare parts for that model over the coming years.
  • Whether the controller is proprietary, and what that means for servicing later.
  • How the lift behaves during a power failure, and whether a backup arrangement is included.
  • What documentation is handed over for inspection purposes.

Post your requirement with the building type, number of floors, whether it is a new installation, modernisation or AMC, and whether the shaft already exists. Interested lift and elevator professionals will contact you to assess it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need permission to install a lift in India? expand_more
In most states, yes. Lifts are governed by a state Lift Act or equivalent rules, which typically require permission before installation and an inspection before the lift is put into use, followed by periodic inspection thereafter. Housing societies and commercial buildings have their own approval process on top. A contractor who works in your state will know the current requirement — ask at the enquiry stage, not after the shaft is built.
Which lift type suits my building? expand_more
It depends on travel height, usage and what the building can accommodate. Hydraulic lifts suit low-rise buildings and homes and need a machine space but less headroom. Traction lifts suit taller buildings and are more efficient over many floors. Machine room less lifts remove the separate machine room entirely, which matters when there is no space for one. Home lifts are a category of their own, sized for a household rather than a crowd.
What has to be ready before installation? expand_more
A shaft built to the supplier drawing, with correct dimensions, plumb walls, the specified pit depth and headroom at the top, plus a dedicated power supply and, where required, a machine space. These are provided by the building side, not the lift supplier, and getting the shaft wrong is the most common cause of delay because it cannot be corrected easily once built.
Is an AMC really necessary? expand_more
For a lift, yes. It is the one machine in a building where a fault can trap people, and most statutory regimes expect regular servicing and inspection records. An AMC should state visit frequency, what is covered, response time for a breakdown, and whether entrapment calls are treated differently from routine faults — that last point is the one people discover matters only when it happens.
When should an old lift be modernised rather than repaired? expand_more
When parts are no longer available, when the controller or drive is obsolete, or when safety features fall short of what is now expected — door sensors, emergency rescue on power failure, overload detection. Modernisation typically retains the shaft and structure while replacing drive, controller, doors and interiors, which is far less disruptive than a full replacement.
