Looking for Masonry & Tile Services?

Every job is different. You may be raising partition walls in a new build, tiling a whole floor, retiling a bathroom that leaks below, cladding an elevation in stone, or replacing a handful of cracked tiles without redoing the room.

Your priorities may differ too — a bathroom that stays watertight, a floor with no hollow tiles, straight joints you do not notice, or simply getting the room back into use quickly.

The difficulty is not finding someone who can lay a tile. It is finding someone who prepares what goes underneath it.

foundation

New construction

Brick, block or AAC walls raised as part of a building — partitions, external walls and compound walls, then plastered and tiled.

Tile and stone cutting for sills, steps, kitchen platforms and awkward corners where standard sizes will not do.

Understanding masonry and tile

About masonry and tile work in India

Masonry and tiling are two trades that usually arrive on site as one team, because they follow each other so closely. A wall is raised, plastered, and then tiled — often by the same crew in the same week. That is convenient, and it is also why the two get talked about together even though they are different skills.

Both are also trades where the work is judged entirely on things you can see, while the failures come from things you cannot. A wall is judged on how straight it looks and fails on how it was bonded. A tiled floor is judged on the tile and fails on what is underneath it.

Masonry: building the wall itself

This is the part that belongs only to this category — the wall as structure rather than as a surface to decorate.

  • Red brick — traditional, widely available, and forgiving when you need to fix something into the wall later. Heavier, and slower to lay.
  • AAC blocks — lighter, which reduces load on the structure, faster to lay because of their size, more uniform, and better at keeping heat out. Increasingly the default in multi-storey work.
  • Concrete blocks — strong and economical for boundary walls, service areas and load-bearing situations.
  • Stone masonry — used for boundary walls, plinths and elevation work, and for repair of older stone structures. Marble tile and granite tile work sits alongside it as the finished surface.

What matters more than the choice is the laying: staggered joints so verticals do not line up, mortar of consistent thickness, courses kept level and plumb, and curing that is actually done rather than assumed. A wall built quickly and left to dry too fast will crack, whatever it is built from.

Tiling: the part underneath decides everything

Every common tiling complaint — hollow sound, cracked tile, lifted corner, opening grout line — traces to the bed or the substrate rather than the tile.

  • Adhesive or cement-sand? Adhesive is the modern standard: better grip, thinner bed, far fewer hollow spots. Large-format and vitrified tiles genuinely need it, and so does all wall tiling. Cement-sand still serves for ordinary floor work.
  • Full coverage under the tile. Voids are the single most common defect. Notched trowel, correct consistency, and the tile pressed properly home.
  • Substrate must be sound and level. Tiles cannot correct an uneven surface — they follow it, and the unevenness shows as lippage between tiles.
  • Joints, not butt-jointing. Tiles need a joint to accommodate movement. Laying them tight is what causes tenting and cracking later.
  • Expansion joints in large floors and wherever the floor meets a wall.

Bathrooms and kitchens: where tiling has to work, not just look right

These rooms are the real test, and the failure shows up in the flat below rather than in the room itself.

  • Waterproofing goes in before the tiles — the sunken portion and the floor. Once tiled, it is unreachable.
  • Slope to the drain is set in the bed, not by the tiles. No slope means standing water regardless of how well it is laid.
  • Waterproof adhesive and epoxy grout in wet zones. Ordinary grout absorbs water, darkens and eventually lets it through.
  • Corners and junctions — where floor meets wall is where movement happens and where sealing matters most. Outdoor tile and terrace tile work needs the same attention, plus a fall towards the drain.
  • Kitchen tile installation and platforms in granite or stone need cut-outs planned before any tile cutting or stone cutting begins, since a piece cannot be re-cut larger.

Grouting, regrouting and repair

  • Grouting is done after laying, once the bed has set. Rushing it disturbs tiles that have not yet taken hold.
  • Regrouting — old grout raked out and replaced. Worth doing when the tiles themselves are sound but the joints have darkened, cracked or crumbled. Far less disruptive than retiling.
  • Tile repair and tile replacement — individual cracked or hollow tiles lifted and reset. Matching an old batch is usually the hard part, which is why keeping spares from the original lot matters.
  • Masonry repair — cracks traced to their cause before filling. A crack that is still moving will simply reopen through the repair.

How the work runs

  1. Site visit. Area measured, substrate condition checked, levels and slopes assessed, and wet areas identified.
  2. Material selection. Tile or block chosen, and for tiles, confirmed from a single batch — shade varies between lots and it shows across a floor.
  3. Masonry, where applicable. Walls raised, cured, then plastered.
  4. Waterproofing in wet areas before any tiling begins.
  5. Setting out. The tiler plans the layout so cut tiles fall in the least visible places and full tiles land where the eye goes first. This step separates good work from ordinary.
  6. Laying. Adhesive or bed applied, tiles set with spacers, levels checked continuously.
  7. Curing. The floor left alone for the period the material needs before grouting and before use.
  8. Grouting and cleaning. Joints filled, surface cleaned before the grout haze sets.
  9. Inspection. Tap-test across the floor for hollow sounds, check lippage with a straight edge, and look along the surface at a low angle rather than straight down.

How to choose a masonry and tile contractor

Searching for tile contractors near me or masonry contractors near me returns both trades together, and many crews genuinely do both. What separates the ones worth shortlisting:

  • They check the substrate before quoting, rather than pricing from an area figure alone.
  • They say whether they are using adhesive or cement-sand, and why.
  • They plan the setting-out so cuts fall where they are least visible.
  • They insist on waterproofing before tiling in wet areas instead of treating it as optional.
  • They confirm tiles are from one batch.
  • They allow proper curing time instead of promising same-day use.

Before deciding, consider

  • Who supplies material, and how much wastage is allowed for cuts and breakage.
  • Whether removal of old tiles and debris disposal is included.
  • Whether grouting — and epoxy grout in wet areas — is inside the scope.
  • How long each area will be out of use.
  • What happens if a tile sounds hollow after handover.
  • Whether spare tiles are left with you, since matching a batch later is rarely possible.

Post your requirement with the area, which rooms, whether it is new masonry, fresh tiling or repair, and the material you have in mind. Interested masonry and tile professionals will contact you to discuss the substrate and arrange a visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between masonry work and tile work in India? expand_more
Masonry builds the wall — brick, block, AAC or stone laid in mortar to form structure or partition. Tile work is the finish applied to a surface that already exists. Many contractors do both, which is convenient on a site where a new wall is built and then tiled, but they are different skills and it is worth asking which one they actually specialise in.
Red bricks or AAC blocks — which is better? expand_more
AAC blocks are lighter (easing structural load), faster to lay, more uniform and better insulating; red bricks are traditional, locally available and take nails and fixtures more forgivingly. New multi-storey work increasingly favours AAC; both build sound walls when laid properly.
Why do bathroom tiles leak into the room below? expand_more
The failure is under the tiles — missing or damaged waterproofing, wrong slope, or unfilled joints letting water reach the slab. Correct practice: waterproof the sunken portion and floor, maintain slope to drain, and use waterproof adhesive and epoxy grout in wet areas. Tiles are the visible layer; the system beneath does the job.
Should tiles be laid with cement or adhesive? expand_more
Adhesive is the modern standard — better grip for large and vitrified tiles, thinner beds and fewer hollow spots. Cement-sand still serves for some ordinary floor work. Large-format tiles and any wall tiling genuinely need adhesive; ask which is being used and why.
How soon can a new tiled floor be used? expand_more
Foot traffic after 24 hours, furniture after 48–72, and grouting typically the day after laying. Marble takes longer because polishing follows laying. Rushing loads onto a fresh floor is how hollow tiles and cracked joints are born — build the cure time into your plan.
